11 Words And Phrases People In Oregon Just Don’t Understand
When you’ve spent a lot of time in one place, it’s easy to forget that there are other places in the country with completely different words for some of the very same things we interact with in our day-to-day lives. And then every once in a while, you may hear someone ask for “jimmies” on their ice cream, or if you’ll pass the “clicker”. Here are 11 words and phrases you don’t hear often in the Beaver State. How many of these terms do you recognize?

In New England, the popular term for sprinkles is "Jimmies".

In parts of the South, avocados are often called "alligator pears". It's actually a pretty clever name, but if you asked a waiter for "extra alligator pear" here in Oregon, you would probably get some pretty confused looks.

Some people use a "clicker" to change the TV channel. The technology may be the same, but here in Oregon we use a remote.

In Wisconsin, a water fountain is more commonly known as a "bubbler".

In some Southern states, a "buggy" or "shopping buggy" refers to a shopping cart.

While many states call them "rotaries", the common term for a circular traffic median in Oregon is a "roundabout".

What Oregonians call a casserole, many other states call "hot dish".

In New England, soft serve ice cream goes by the colloquial term "creemee".

Many people in the midwest go to "the washroom" when they need to use the toilet. Here in Oregon, it's almost exclusively called a bathroom or a restroom.

In some Southern states, people refer to their living rooms as "the parlor".

In Oregon, the soft, warm shoes we wear to keep our feet cozy at home are called slippers, but many other places call them House Shoes.
