Oregonians are lucky to have 255 state parks to choose from when we want to get out and enjoy nature. Here’s one little park that has an interesting history, and if you’ve never visited you’ll want to soon!

You'll find Champoeg State Heritage Area on the banks of the Willamette River, south of Wilsonville.

This pretty park encompasses 622 acres, and it was once the site of Champoeg - a pioneer town that was founded in 1842.
Oregon State Parks
Champoeg is the site of an important event in Oregon's history. Settlers in the Willamette met in 1843 to establish a provisional government for the Oregon Country.

The town was flooded in 1861, and the waters washed away almost every building. Champoeg was almost completely destroyed, and was abandoned after the flood. You'll see some markers here that show how high the floodwater were that year.

You'll want to check out the restored Newell House, Donald Manson Barn, and Pioneer Mothers Log Cabin to learn more about the folks who played an important role in the statehood of Oregon, and what their lives were like back in the 1800s.
Oregon State Parks
Camp overnight in one of the six cabins or six yurts, or bring your RV to stay at one of the 67 electric sites and 8 full hook-up sites. The park also offers restrooms and showers.
