One Of The Most Beautiful Places On Planet Earth Is Right Here In Oregon
Planet Earth has countless places that seem otherworldly in their beauty and presence, and one of them just happens to be right here in Oregon. This is wonderful news for those of us lucky enough to call Oregon home, as it requires minimal traveling and delivers an unforgettable experience. Even for those out of state, a trip to Oneonta Gorge is one not to be missed. Tucked away in a moss-covered canyon, it’s a natural wonder that appears like something from a storybook.
Within the majestic Columbia River Gorge can be found one of the most exquisite sites in all of Oregon: the Oneonta Gorge. What makes this place so memorable is not only the cascading waterfall and the clear blue waters leading up to it, but also the rare growth of surrounding plants.
Oneonta Gorge was first documented in 1849, photographed by a man by the name of Carleton Eugene Watkins who had come across it during the Gold Rush. He named the site after his hometown of Oneonta, New York. Today, the site is incredibly popular among hikers and photographers alike.
Like a scene from a prehistoric time, the soft ferns and moss lead visitors through an enchanting gorge. In fact, the site has been designated by the U.S. Forest Service as a botanical area because of the rare woodland flora that grows there.
Located in Multnomah County, Oneonta Gorge is most easily accessed by the short trail that leads up to it. This trail follows the pristine Oneonta Creek as it meanders through the canyon. For about 1/2 mile, hikers will walk through the creek, wading carefully through the cool waters.
At the end of the gorge appears the breathtaking Oneonta Falls, which cascade an impressive 100 feet. This creates one of the most dramatic and breathtaking visions you’ll find in the entire state. If you do plan on hiking the groge, be sure to wear shoes with good traction and a change of dry clothes.
