The Strawberry Capital of the World Is Hiding In Small Town Oklahoma And It’s As Weirdly Wonderful As You’d Expect
As quirky as it sounds, Oklahoma has a small town that is the Strawberry Capital of the World. Stilwell has held this official title since 1949, and every year they hold a festival in honor of it. Strawberry production has declined in this small town over the years, but the annual festival continues to draw in thousands of visitors every year. It’s weirdly wonderful, and come this May, we think you’ll enjoy a day visiting Stilwell at this beloved festival.
As you drive into town, you'll be greeted by the official town sign that reads "Welcome to Stilwell, Strawberry Capital of the World."
The town is only home to about 3,700 residents but every year over 30,000 visitors flock to the town to attend the annual Strawberry Festival that is held on the second Saturday in May.
As you would guess, the festival is all about strawberries. It originally started to promote strawberry production in the area. Everyone loved it so much, they have continued it for more than 70 years.
There will also be lots and lots of fresh strawberries and baked goods contests. Even if you don't visit during the festival, Stilwell has some delicious restaurants, fun parks, and history centers to check out.
Believe it or not, we also have a small town in Oklahoma that is the “Watermelon Capital of the World”! The town also holds an annual festival in honor of watermelon. Read more about it in our previous article, “Don’t Miss The Rush Springs Watermelon Festival In Oklahoma.”
