Hike To These Sacred Bluffs In Oklahoma For An Awe-Inspiring Experience
We’ve featured the Wichita Mountains many times before but there’s a place in the mountains that we’ve never highlighted – that is until now. The Medicine Bluffs are a sacred ceremonial site that are not only historical but strikingly beautiful. You can hike (or drive) to see them and it’s an awe-inspiring experience you won’t forget.
The Medicine Bluffs are located near Fort Sill - home of the U.S. Army Field Artillery School which occupies a large portion of the southeastern end of the Wichita Mountains.
The site is rich with history and many legends. It used to be famous for Native American suicides. There is a huge fissure between two of the bluffs that was called "Medicine Man’s Walk." In fact, legend has it that Geronimo leaped off the cliff with his horse, never to tell of it again.
If you visit the Fort Sill Museum, they will give you directions for the hike. You can also drive the road by the archery range and see it in the distance.
Legend has it that people used to come here to get healed. Whether you believe these stories or not, the bluffs are sacred and should be respected. Take a day trip and enjoy the breathtaking beauty of these legendary bluffs.
