Camping is a great way to experience the great outdoors. While most of us like to plan our getaways ahead of time, sometimes plans change and you need a last-minute place to stay or maybe you’re the adventurous type that likes to decide on a whim. Either way, if you need a campground that offers a ton of relaxation, we found seven great ones that are perfect for a memorable getaway.
1. Beavers Bend State Park, Broken Bow
One of the most spectacular places to camp is at Beavers Bend State Park in southeastern Oklahoma. This state park boasts over 390 glorious campsites, many of which sit right on the water. It’s situated in one of the most mountainous regions in the state and offers visitors many water sources including streams, a lake, rivers, ponds, and more. There are a total of 8 campgrounds in the park with over 390 campsites and over 50 tent sites. Plus, they have RV options and cabin rentals.
2. Greenleaf State Park, Braggs
Greenleaf State Park has been nominated as "Park of the Year" numerous times due to its beautiful area and friendly staff. Greenleaf has 5 camping areas and includes an upper and lower section in the park. RV and tent camping are both popular, so book reservations ahead of time if you want this option. Greenleaf also offers some of the best hiking in the state and has trails for all skill levels.
3. Lake Thunderbird State Park, Norman
For a campground close enough to the city but far enough to feel secluded, visit Lake Thunderbird State Park near Norman. The park has all the water activities on Lake Thunderbird and the park offers many outdoor recreational activities to keep the whole family happy, including equestrian trails, a nature center, an archery range, and several hiking trails. The campgrounds offer 200 RV sites with 30 full hookups and many primitive campsites. Restroom facilities and picnic shelters are also available to visitors.
4. Black Mesa State Park, Kenton
Head to Black Mesa State Park & Nature Preserve and pitch a tent in one of the most remote campgrounds in the state. It’s located in the Panhandle, in far northwestern Oklahoma, and is home to beautiful scenery, unique topography, gorgeous hiking trails, epic night skies, and much more. Black Mesa State Park Campground, which is nestled right on the banks of Lake Carl Etling. There are 25 tent sites and 29 RV sites here, and they're first-come, first-served, so get there early.
5. Lake Murray State Park, Ardmore
One of the best places to go camping is at Buzzards Roost – a lakeside campground on the shores of beautiful Lake Murray. Buzzards Roost is full of amenities, including tent camping, RV camping, fire rings, a dump station, restrooms with showers, a boat ramp, a playground, and beautiful views. Most of the campsites have trees, so there's plenty of shade. The campground is also open year-round, so you can enjoy it during all seasons.
6. Chickasaw National Recreation Area, Sulphur
Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Sulphur, Oklahoma is one of the best camping spots in America – full of lush greenery, gorgeous waterfalls, and epic scenery. This hidden gem is tucked away in south-central Oklahoma and is an absolutely picturesque spot to enjoy the great outdoors. Chickasaw National Area has six public campgrounds. Three are located in the Platt Historic District area and the other three are located near Lake of the Arbuckles.
7. Quartz Mountain State Park, Lone Wolf
Located along the shores of Lake Altus-Lugert in southwestern Oklahoma, Quartz Mountain State Park offers 5 campgrounds that include 119 RV sites and 99 primitive campsites. The area also has an amusement park, hiking trails, fishing boating, and rock climbing. The views here are absolutely stunning.
