If you’re looking for a way to feel like you’ve traveled outside of Oklahoma, then this is the trail to hike.
The red sandstone is a distinctive, beautiful feature that makes you feel like you’re in a southwestern state like Arizona. The cliffs towering over the lake are a stunning sight to see.
The trail brings you up and on the canyon ridge line.
It’s a loop trail, and is quite busy. It’s well maintained except for short areas that can become overgrown quickly. Make sure to wear long pants, as burrs can be a problem in these bushy areas.
Sometimes sections of the trail can be unmarked, and the trail will temporarily disappear.
Be aware and keep your eyes peeled. Practice caution on the slippery areas of the hike, and there are a couple of short areas where you may have to scramble a bit to get through a section of the hike.
This canyon was a stop on California Road, a route used by settlers on their way to California. There was fresh water nearby, and it was a good spot to rest and repair their wagons. Before the settlers traveled through, it was a winter campsite for the indigenous peoples of the Great Plains.
This hike is located within Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park.
There’s plenty of parking, and a daily admission fee. For a vehicle with up to 5 occupants, it’s $10.00 per day. For each additional occupant over 5, it’s another $2.00 per person. Motorcycles are only $5.00 per day.
The Red Rock Canyon Rim trail is one of the most spectacular hikes to do in this area.
And there’s so much to do within this adventure park, including many more trails to explore. There’s camping, and even a swimming pool you can cool off in after your hike. This is the perfect spot to bring the whole family for the day.
