Why Oklahoma Drivers May Soon Receive Thousands Of Tickets Per Month
Oklahoma has the highest rate of uninsured drivers in the nation and a new deal was just signed with a company to combat this growing problem. The program will start next year and if you’re driving illegally without insurance, you’ll want to get all the details below.
Imagine walking out to your mailbox next year, but instead of your usual bills and mail, you have an unexpected surprise.
A $184 ticket could be sitting in your mailbox if you're an uninsured driver that gets picked up by one of the automatic scanners that will be installed in the state next year.
Yep, an OHP or policeman won't even have to pull you over to get this new ticket. A new company just signed a deal with the state to set up scanners that will run your license plate against their database of insured drivers, and if you aren't found, then you can expect a hefty fine delivered to your mailbox.
Starting in 2018 this new program will be implemented and Oklahoma drivers will see about 20,000 new tickets per month. The scanners will be placed in 15 counties in the Tulsa and Oklahoma City metro areas to start.
Oklahoma is one of the worst states when it comes to uninsured drivers. Surveys show that up to 26% of all drivers in the Sooner State are uninsured — the worst in the nation. This new program will hopefully cut that number substantially and lower everyone's premiums.
And the good news is, drivers who pay the fees will avoid having a charge of driving without insurance on their permanent record. So, if you don't have car insurance, now would be a good time to call an insurance agent before an automatic scanner finds you driving
illegally.
