As one of only four states, with more than 10 ecoregions, the Sooner State has many diverse topographies. The Southwestern Tablelands ecoregion in Oklahoma encompasses Black Mesa country in extreme western Oklahoma. It is full of dramatic rock formations, an abundance of wildlife, ancient mesas, rugged beauty, mountains and shortgrass prairies. It also boasts the highest point in the state – 4,973 ft. above sea level.

The plateau that formed at the top of the mesa has been known as a "geological wonder" of North America.

Incredible natural rock formations, including Wedding Party, Wedding Cake and Old Maid captivate visitors.

In 1959, Oklahoma created Black Mesa State Park - 549 acres of beautiful land, lakes, campgrounds, hiking and much more.

It's a place where the Rocky Mountains meet the shortgrass prairies.

Black Mesa country has given geologists and paleontologists rare moments to investigate Jurassic and Triassic rocks and the dinosaur bones in them.

Over 18 tons of camptosaurus, stegosaurus, brontosaurus, diplodocus, and edmontosaurus bones have been quarried at Black Mesa.

Petroglyphs can be found inside the caves.

The sunsets and night skies are otherworldly.

Black Mesa is named from the layer of black lava rock that coated the mesas from years ago.
