12 Oklahoma Staples You Should Have Tried By Now
There are some definite food items that come to mind when you think of Oklahoma. Of course, we are known for barbeque and chicken fried steak, but did you know Indian tacos are an iconic food in the state? See how many of these 12 staple food and drink items you have tried before.
We’re aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life. While we continue to feature destinations that make our state wonderful, please take proper precautions or add them to your bucket list to see at a later date. If you know of a local business that could use some extra support during these times, please nominate them here:
1. Fried Onion Burgers
El Reno has made Oklahoma famous for their fried onion burgers. There are several establishments in the state where you can order a mouthwatering burger or try making one at home. The fried onions give the burgers such a unique flavor.
2. Chicken & Waffles
Chicken and waffles came to Oklahoma early in the 20th century by two of Oklahoma’s first restaurant pioneers, Bill Bishop and Beverly Osborne. It might seem like a strange combination but give it a try...it's delicious.
3. Black-Eyed Peas
As part of the Oklahoma state meal, black-eyed peas are a staple food that seems to get overlooked. They are fantastic in soup on a cold, winter day.
4. Chicken Fried Steak
If you haven't tried chicken fried steak, then you probably aren't from Oklahoma. It's also part of the state meal and with so many places across the state offering this delicacy, you have no excuse. Pour some white gravy on top and you just might have one of the best meals ever.
5. Marshall Beer
Oklahoma is known for a variety of locally crafted beer. If you've visited some of the state's restaurants, chances are they've carried Marshall beer on tap.
6. Homemade BBQ Sauce
We LOVE our favorite bbq sauce but have you ever made your own from scratch? If not, search out some recipes on google and create your own special batch.
7. Pecan Pie
It's amazing how many people have never tried pecan pie. It's the dessert in our state meal and it's so sweet and full of yumminess. Many pecan pies are made from pecans grown right here in the Sooner State.
I had never even heard of grits when I moved to Oklahoma from California, and I can still say I've never had them to this day (sorry!). Apparently, they are popular because, they too, are part of the state meal.
9. Indian Tacos
Who knew these frybread creations were so popular in the Sooner State? You can pretty much find them at most festivals and fairs across the state. They are usually served with ground beef or grilled chicken and layered with toppings.
10. Weber's Root Beer
If you've never tried Weber's root beer, then you've been missing out on some of the best root beer ever made. If you have a sweet tooth, throw in some vanilla ice cream for an outstanding root beer float.
11. Biscuits & Gravy
This popular breakfast dish has been warming the bellies of Oklahomans since before statehood. Just remember, you can never have too much gravy!
12. Fried Okra
Who wants veggies that aren't fried? Not Oklahomans! We love to fry everything in sight and okra is no different. It's an amazing dish that's also part of our state meal, so give it a try.
