Biologists say we have nothing to worry about. During migration, these small creatures exhibit awkward behavior, which can include flying around in the daytime.

Apparently, they are attracted to insects — and insects are attracted to the lights in the downtown area. Also, the tall buildings can mimic cliffs and draw them in. The most common bats you'll see in the OKC area this time of year are Eastern Red bats, Hoary bats, and Silver-haired bats.

If you spot a bat, please stay away from it, as they can carry rabies (among other diseases if you know what I mean). In all seriousness, please keep your distance and give these wild species their space. In time, they should move out of the area and everything will be back to our new normal of mask-wearing, extreme hand-washing, and social distancing.

It may seem strange to have a bat invasion in the middle of one of our busiest cities. While biologists say it’s quite normal, others aren’t so sure they aren’t living out a scene in a Dracula movie. Just be sure to keep your distance and please be aware that if a bat is found inside your home, dead or alive, the bat MUST be tested for rabies.
