11 Undying Habits That Prove You Can Never Take Cleveland Out Of The Clevelander
Cleveland, a beautiful and sprawling city, is impressive. What is even more impressive is the influence the city has over its residents. Us Clevelanders have developed our own way of talking, celebrating, and, it seems, behaving. If you live in Cleveland, you’ve probably developed some of these unusual habits.
1. You expect diverse beauty everywhere you go.
Cleveland and its suburbs are full of spectacular architecture, beautiful sculptures, and stunning examples of street art. When exploring new cities, you always expect them to have similar charm.
2. You spend a lot of time outside.
Cleveland is so full of beautiful outdoor attractions, parks, festivals, and public gardens that it's hard to stay indoors!
3. You order a "soda."
If reading that sentence made your skin crawl, you're a true Clevelander. Of course, we're kidding about the soda. Here, we call it "pop."
4. Like all Clevelanders, you consider time to be a measure of distance.
Have you noticed that when providing directions, you say things like, "From here, it's only a 15 minute drive?" It's okay. We all do it.
5. You wait all year for autumn.
Cleveland offers one of the most stunning autumn displays in the world. Our diversity of trees creates a splendid fall palette, and local apple orchards and pumpkin patches sell their goods in mass quantity.
6. No matter the season, your closet has a winter coat handy
just in case.
You're used to unpredictable weather—I mean, does anybody else remember May 2016 when it actually
snowed? Living in Cleveland, it seems, prepares you for such weather-related atrocities.
7. As soon as its warm out, you're in shorts and short sleeves.
Maybe we're crazy, but after an intensely cold winter, a 50 degree day feels cozy. As soon as it's warm enough to mow the lawn, it's warm enough for short sleeves.
8. You love to root for the underdog.
I wonder where Clevelanders picked up this habit?
9. Random cravings for ethnic foods are the norm for you.
Cleveland is a melting pot and we have access to awesome foods, like authentic pierogies and traditional Italian cuisine, that you just can't find anywhere else... or at least all in one spot.
10. You're always stocked up on fresh fruits and veggies.
While Cleveland is far from rural, it is surrounded by the fertile Northeast Ohio farmland, providing constant access to fresh goods. When you grow up eating the freshest seasonal produce, it's hard to settle for anything less.
11. You're kind of obsessed with your hometown.
We'll chuckle at the "stuck in Ohio" and "mistake on the lake" remarks, but we certainly don't sympathize with them. We're from the coolest city in the U.S., and we're darn proud of it.
Cleveland offers so much to love that it’s a delight to call it your hometown. Whenever you explain to new acquaintances where you hail from, you feel a swell of pride in your chest. What odd habits have you picked up as a side effect of living in Cleveland?
