As spring arrives, Northeast Ohio comes down with March madness. The season is filled with sweetness, thanks in part to our bountiful harvest of maple sugar. The best time to harvest it is in early March, so you must take advantage of the sweet season by visiting these awesome sugarhouses.
This super sweet sugarhouse is a family-operated backyard business located in an old barn. Stop by March 10 - 11 for demonstrations that will make your sweet tooth go wild. This sugarhouse is open between 11 AM and 4 PM.
Hike along the Sugarbush Trail and take in the wonders of maple sugaring in the beautiful Emerald Necklace. Watch as park officials collect sap while you learn about the history of syrup-making in the region. Stop by March 3-4, 10-11, or 17-18 between 11 AM and 4 PM.
This seventh generation family farm produces organic maple syrup, and now you can indulge in its tastiness. Swing by March 4, 11, or 18 between 8:30 AM and 2 PM for a mouthwatering pancake breakfast topped with pure Ohio maple syrup. An adult meal is $8, children ages 4 to 10 can eat for $4, and children under 3 are free. After you indulge in maple deliciousness, swing by their website to order some syrup from this scenic farm.
Take a ride on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad via the Maple Sugar Express and journey to Hale Farm & Village for the incredible Maple Sugar Festival. Here, you can enjoy syrupy pancakes and head out into the sugaring camp to learn about tree tapping. While you're at the festival, be sure to check out period reenactments to witness arts like glass blowing. Event dates are March 10-11, and 17-18. Swing by the Sugarhouse any Sunday in March between the hours of noon and 4 PM. The ceremonial maple tapping takes place March 4, 2018 at 1 PM.
The log cabin that would become Ma & Pa's Gift Shack was built in the 1820s. It was eventually dismantled and reassembled at its current location, where Ma and Pa offer Maple Tours in the spring. Stop by March 3-4 or 10-11 between 10 AM and 5 PM.
Organic maple syrup from Geauga County is irresistible, and it's amazing to watch the staff at this charming family farm tap 2,200 trees. Stop by March 3-4 and 10-11. The event opens at 10 AM on Saturdays or noon on Sundays and closes at 5 PM daily.
This fifth generation family farm is open for one day only! Stop by on March 3 between 10 AM and 5 PM for a tour of the sugaring operation, which is composed of 475 trees. Warm up by a bonfire after your tour!
