Cincinnati has always been a town that loves its history and tries as much as possible to hang on to its roots. We love tradition and our pride runs deep for those Cincinnati treasures we hold close to our hearts. There’s no better evidence of this love than the revitalization of downtown and OTR, both of which seem to celebrate a new opening week after week. We’ve seen old buildings take on new life, but one particular spot on Main Street downtown has been restored to its former glory. BayHorse Cafe and Roadhouse is once again open for business and you’ll want to visit.
The original BayHorse Cafe opened in 1817 in a different downtown location. After a few moves, the bar settled in at its current 6th and Main Street spot, where it lasted for decades. In 2004, amidst quite a bit of drama, the bar closed and has been collecting dust ever since.
This historic neighborhood bar was a popular gathering place and once served more Hudepohl than any other place in the city. Legend has it that one day a bay colored horse wandered into the bar, hence its unique name.
The bar is alive again today thanks to the current owners, who have spent years restoring it. The inside is full of character and is a comfortable place to relax with a drink or even a panini at lunch time. The cafe serves lunch from 11:30 - 2:30.
BayHorse is in a great location for anyone to pay it a visit. It's around the corner from Aronoff, making it ideal for before or after the show drinks.
It's also right along the streetcar route, adding modern convenience to this legendary building. A place that was once considered quite avoidable is now a highlight of the rebirth of downtown.
BayHorse is open from 11am-11pm Monday through Friday and 4pm-11pm on Saturday. The colorful, iconic sign hangs above the sidewalk as yet another way that Cincinnati can hang on to its past while stepping into the future.
Did you visit BayHorse back in the day? Will you stop by the new, beautifully restored location? Share your thoughts and experience with us in the comments! BayHorse Cafe and Roadhouse is located at 625 Main St. Cincinnati, OH 45202. Follow them along on Facebook here.
