This Road Trip To The Most Majestic Castles Around Cincinnati Is Like Something From A Fairytale
Everyone has a fascination with castles on some level, given their majestic and mysterious nature. We may not be located in the European countryside, near towering medieval homes, but we do happen to have quite a few castles within a short drive from Cincinnati. If you’re looking for a unique way to spend the day, grab a friend, a tiara (or a crown), and check out the most eye-catching castles around our city that are straight out of a fairytale.
If you take a look at the map below, you see we begin our road trip just north of Cincinnati in Loveland and end up outside of Louisville.
The Château Laroche, more commonly known as the Loveland Castle, is the closest true castle to Cincinnati. You can visit and tour the property, and several unique events are hosted here throughout the year. For more information on the Loveland Castle, check out our previous article here.
Stop #2 - Elsinore Arch - corner of Gilbert Avenue and Elsinore Place
Elsinore Arch is a historic structure on the edge of Eden Park that was built to look like the facade of Kronborg Castle, a castle in Denmark that served as inspiration for Shakespeare's Hamlet. Stop #3 - The Kentucky Castle - 230 Pisgah Pike, Versailles, KY 40383
Next, we head south to Versailles, a beautiful town just outside of Lexington, KY. The Kentucky Castle (formerly CastlePost) is the grandest castle in the region and is now an incredible bed and breakfast, restaurant, and event space. In fact, you should time your trip to stop here for a meal or split it into two days and spend an unforgettable night! Castle & Key is a historic distillery in Frankfort that is being brought back to life. The grounds are stunning and it's shaping up to be a fabulously unique destination in our area. Stop #5 - Yew Dell Botanical Gardens - 6220 Old Lagrange Rd., Crestwood, KY 40014
The last stop before making your way back to Cincinnati is at the Yew Dell Botanical Gardens in Crestwood, located just outside of Louisville. This former private residence and garden is now a lush green space that is made up of several themed areas. The historic castle on the property used to be a pool house and is now a lovely landmark in this outdoor fairytale paradise.
