Experienced climbers often spend the night camping right on the vertical face of El Capitan, suspended hundreds of feet from solid ground as they work their way up the challenging route to the top. These brave men and women are seriously dedicated to their journey – we’re definitely not brave enough to sleep in such a precarious place!

Yosemite contains many alpine areas, which can be seen as you ascend and descend from the Tioga Pass gate.

Just below the alpine peaks, a much drier and warmer area unfolds before you. The rock colors hint at the presence of iron and other minerals, and the depth and sweeping surroundings of this high desert landscape provide a marked contrast to other parts of the park.
