Nearly two years ago, the devastating Carr Fire burned through nearly 230,000 acres of land in Shasta and Trinity Counties. It was an awful event that left one of Northern California’s most beautiful landscapes almost completely in ruins. Whiskeytown National Recreation Area was extremely affected by the fire and much of it has been closed off to the public ever since the catastrophic event took place. However, the park just recently announced the reopening of an especially popular Whiskeytown Falls trail, and we couldn’t be more ecstatic!
Good news for Whiskeytown Falls lovers! Whiskeytown National Recreation Area recently announced the reopening of one of their most popular trails—the James K. Carr Trail—since the 2018 Carr Fire took place, and we couldn't be more excited.
When the disastrous Carr Fire tore through the area in 2018, our hearts were utterly broken for this beautiful area. The James K. Carr trail specifically received extensive damage. It became dangerously eroded and unstable for hikers.
As of February 14, 2020, this 2.7-mile section of trail is officially open to the public once again. The park's staff put in a ton of work over several months in order to restore the widely-loved trail, reconstructing the iconic footbridge and re-stabilizing several parts of the trail.
Additionally, three rock walls were built, signs were replaced, and numerous hazardous trees were removed along Crystal Creek Road. The area may look a little different than before the fire took place, but it's still just as gorgeous.
Still, Whiskeytown NRA workers are urging hikers to stay alert when using the trail. Falling trees can still occur, especially on windy days. Remain cautious, stay on the trail, and keep in mind that this is still a fragile landscape that's in recovery.
The trailhead for this popular trek can be found on Crystal Creek Road, just about four miles south of State Route 299. Boasting about 760-feet in elevation gain, this moderate climb leads you to the breathtaking 220-foot cascade known as Whiskeytown Falls. As the park's tallest waterfall, seeing its beauty firsthand is always a wonderful experience.
