The Obsidian Dome Trail is a short, 1-mile out-and-back trail that leads you through a massive dome made of obsidian rock. This natural dome was formed completely from solidified lava which eventually turned into obsidian.

Since obsidian is such a hard and sharp material, come prepared with adequate footwear. This hiking trail is relatively easy with little elevation change, but it can be hard on your feet without proper shoes.

The dome itself is a mesmerizing natural wonder, but the view from the trail isn't too shabby either. From here, you'll have an excellent perspective of the Eastern Sierras.

During winter, the trail tooks on an entirely new personality. This area has a vast network of winter hiking trails that are excellent for Nordic skiing or snowshoeing. However, it doesn't really matter when you see this fascinating place, just as long as you DO see it sometime.

Keep in mind that taking any rocks from Obsidian Dome is strictly prohibited! Hikers should do their best to keep this stunning natural wonder in pristine shape for years to come.

To get to Obsidian Dome, drive north on Highway 395 from Mammoth Lakes and turn left onto Bald Mountain Road. The trailhead is visible from the parking lot and marked with a trail map.
