Celebrate The Migration Of Millions Of Birds At Northern California’s Annual Snow Goose Festival
Winter is definitely an exciting season for wildlife enthusiasts here in Northern California. From the annual whale migration taking over the coast to the epic migration of waterfowl down the Pacific Flyway, there’s certainly not a shortage of wildlife viewing activity during this time of year. In fact, there’s even an entire festival that celebrates the beauty and excitement of winter bird migration through the Sacramento Valley. The Annual Snow Goose Festival will be taking place soon in Chico for the 21st year and it's a must for animal enthusiasts. This year, the Snow Goose Festival will take place from January 22 through January 26 at the Chico Masonic Family Center. Presented by the Altacal Audubon Society, this five-day festival boasts all types of unique events for all types of people. From the hardcore birders to young children, there's something for everyone to enjoy.
The Northern Sacramento Valley notably attracts millions of birds every winter and it's become one of the most anticipated events of the year for wildlife lovers. The region's mild winter weather and abundance of food and water make it excellent for hosting large populations of waterfowl and raptors.
The goal of the Snow Goose Festival is to celebrate the epic spectacle that takes place here every winter by increasing public awareness and understanding of Northern California's wildlife. They do that by offering a wide variety of events throughout the festival, ranging from hands-on workshops and outdoor treks to nature films and even a wildlife-themed art show.
Seriously, this festival packs a LOT in. Festival-goers can choose from over 70 field trips and workshops that may pique their interest. These workshops and trips can include everything from wildlife photography basics to boat tours and wilderness safaris. Each workshop does have a fee that can range anywhere from $12 to $50 depending on the class.
There are also plenty of free activities to take part in if you're looking to keep it on the cheap! Some of the events you can expect to be offered are up-close encounters with raptors, owl pellet dissections, and bat presentations.
And be sure not to miss the biggest event of the festival—the "Gathering of Wings" Banquet and Silent Auction. Taking place on Saturday night of the festival, the banquet is often the highlight of many people's festival experience.
