Berkeley In Northern California Has A Snow Day Every Year

For much of California, a White Christmas just isn’t in the cards. However, Northern Californians aren’t the type of people to accept things that are said to be “impossible”. That’s why this one town in our region hosts an actual Snow Day every year. For just one day, snow covers the streets of the town, making it possible for both young and old to see some of that fluffy white stuff for at least a few hours! Did you know that is snows in Berkeley every year? It may be for just one day only but it's still pretty amazing nonetheless. It turns out you don't have to drive to the mountains just to see the snow. All you have to do is drive over to Berkeley's Gourmet Ghetto.

Treat yourself to a White Christmas this weekend and head on over to the Gourmet Ghetto for their 10th annual Snow Day. On December 2nd, the strip of resaturants and boutiques will transform into a snowy wonderland for the day.

The Snow Day takes place every year. On the scheduled day, ten tons of snow are trucked in and distributed over the street. It may not be as "natural" as a real snowfall, but it has the same effect!

Kids go wild for this event, building up snowmen and taking part in snowball fights. Heck, even the adults can join in on the fun. Don't be afraid to get wet...that's all part of the Snow Day experience.

However, there's a lot more to this event than the snow. The Oakland Ballet Company will perform snippets from "The Nutcracker" and the California Revels ensemble will sing some joyful Christmas caroles.

However, one of the highlights of the event involves some special snowballs. Some of these snowballs have prizes inside, including a real diamond ring donated by M. Lowe and Co. All proceeds from the snowballs go towards Berkeley Public Schools.

It's not very often you get to see snow cover the streets of Berkeley, so consider squeezing this delightful event into your plans this weekend. The Snow Day will take place from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, and admission is free.
