There are many beautiful small towns in Northern California, but the ones on this list do Christmas like no others. 1. Truckee

This mountain town becomes a winter wonderland in December. Downtown Truckee is the place to be in Northern California during the winter months, but it is especially fun during Christmastime. Starting with a Christmas tree lighting festival in late November and ending with the Christmas Eve celebration in downtown Truckee, this town just north of Lake Tahoe is a must-visit winter destination. And it’s not far from some of the best ski resorts in the nation!
2. Nevada City

This town has gained notoriety in the past few years. What was once a secret among locals is now known as a beautiful mountain town to all Northern Californians. Especially at Christmastime, Nevada City looks like something out of a Thomas Kincade painting.

3. Grass Valley

We love exploring downtown Grass Valley! This beautiful Gold Rush town has many top-notch restaurants and some super cute boutiques. Starting on November 24, 2023, each Friday until Christmas will be an outdoor faire called Cornish Christmas. The event features food, kids activities, carolers and musicians, as well as Santa Claus himself.

Break up your Christmas shopping by having a tasting at one of the wineries in downtown Sutter Creek. We recommend staying overnight in this charming town. There are many beautiful B&Bs within walking distance to downtown, as well as some charming rentals.
6. Placerville

This Gold Rush town is located right off of Highway 50 about an hour from South Lake Tahoe. Placerville’s historic downtown has many shops, restaurants, and bars. In late November, Placerville hosts a happening tree lighting event. Locals from near and far come out to shop, eat, and socialize for this event that kicks-off the holiday season.
7. Auburn
Auburn, CA, USA
The town of Auburn is a California Historical Landmark. The unique downtown meanders through the hilly region, with the Historic Auburn Courthouse being the centerpiece of this lovely town. Auburn hosts numerous Christmas events– including an arts and crafts faire, and a Christmas lights parade.
