These 3 Small Towns Were Once Home To Northern Californians That Changed The World

TikTok and YouTube video smash sensations aside, there really are no “overnight success stories.” Everyone who’s anyone—and that’s all of us—came from somewhere, putting in the work that got us to where we are today. The same can be said for celebrities and world-renown personalities, many born in or living for a great deal of time in small towns. In this article, we celebrate three small-town heroes who have roots in some of the most beautiful, if not little, Northern California towns. Over the course of time, they made a significant impact in their respective fields and changed the world.
Located about 77 miles north of San Francisco, Geyserville (situated in Sonoma County) is one of the most beautiful small towns in Northern California. Its name hearkens back to the geysers and geothermal springs that peppered the area back in the mid-1800s during its early founding. Today, this small town hovering close to 700 residents is bursting with fine art galleries, restaurants, boutique accommodations, wineries, and more.
One of the most well-known and loved entities here is the Francis Ford Coppola Winery.
Its namesake is the famous Italian-American film director, producer, and screenwriter who made an indelible mark on the motion picture industry beginning in the 1960s. Although Coppola was not born here, he reportedly still lives in the area, and his winery draws visitors from all over the world to enjoy fantastic vintages, amazing culinary creations, and a fantastic park area featuring two swimming pools and cabanas on the expansive property.
Cazadero is situated in a beautiful hilltop valley above the Russian River watershed approximately 30 miles northwest of Santa Rosa. With a population of under 500 people, it definitely fits the definition of a small town and is very inviting and charming. Outdoor recreational activities are big here, particularly along Austin Creek which flows through the area.
Before Garcia changed the world with his distinctive musical stylings and amazing bands over the years since his career began in 1953, he lived here as a small boy. The rest is history!

With a population of just over 3,700 residents and encompassing only one incorporated square mile, Carmel-By-The-Sea is still a small town by California standards, especially since the number of tourists here during high season can easily double it! This spectacular Northern California gem perched along the Pacific Ocean coastline is known far and wide for its cultural landscape featuring over 100 art galleries, one-of-a-kind boutiques, outstanding gastronomic offerings, and pink, powder-fine sand beaches. And don't forget the stunning homes!
The Carmel-By-The-Sea area, including Point Lobos State Reserve pictured here, is world-renown, as is its most famous resident—actor and director Clint Eastwood.

This venerable actor from such films as "The Outlaw Josey Wales," "Escape from Alcatraz," and "The Bridges of Madison County," among countless other films in his illustrious career, has lived here for many years. Eastwood was also elected mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea in 1986, a role he held for two years.
