West coasters are usually seen as having it too easy because of our weather, tolerant lifestyle, and general relaxed reputation. However, San Franciscans and longtime residents can claim to be tough. Why? Fog City has become a costly, competitive, and challenging city that may cause some unwarranted hardship and stress. Why? The 1989 earthquake, numerous small quakes, and as well the 1906 earthquake are known by a lot of people. The reputation of earthquakes and the city is strong. A trembler is enough to scare some sense into anyone and San Francisco is very well-known for them. How tough are you to stay in the city?

With a crime rate of 70 per one thousand residents, San Francisco has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes. So, surviving and not being affected by crime is a feat of toughness and street smarts.

According to the Census and Animal Care and Control Department data, San Francisco has around 10,000 more dogs than children. And not all of those dogs have responsible owners. All we'll say is watch where you're walking at all times! The risk of being here can be cruel and funny. How tough are you?

When you live in the city you can deal with smaller places where as many can't cope or adapt. The struggle of doing a lot with a little is reality here. With average rents surpassing those in New York, the high cost and low availability of apartments in San Francisco is driving locals to live small.

The fast and changing landscape of San Francisco is dizzying. San Franciscans have to deal with a constantly changing cast of stores and places.

If you're not willing to work and play the game then you'll be left out in the cold. San Franciscans are tough cookies. The competition for a job in tech or the pressure of funding a start-up will make anyone feel stressed. If you wanted a more relaxing job then move or work elsewhere.

They may be beautiful, but walking two blocks on a steep uphill street can be a real struggle. If your navigation says it's only a few blocks away, you might end up walking up a mountain face to get there. No pain, no gain!

A study released by Nested found that San Francisco residents pay the highest rent in the world. If you live in San Francisco, the rents can be absolutely soul-crushing and budget-breaking. Everything in this pricey town can be linked back to the absurd rent prices, so you need to be tough to survive and hack it.
