West coasters are usually seen as having it too easy because of our weather, tolerant lifestyle, and general relaxed reputation. However, San Franciscans and longtime residents can claim to be tough. Why? Fog City has become a costly, competitive, and challenging city that may cause some unwarranted hardship and stress. Read our tongue-in-cheek list of reasons why people from San Francisco are tougher than you think!
1. We live here despite the earthquake risk.
Why? The 1989 earthquake, numerous small quakes, and as well the 1906 earthquake are known by a lot of people. The reputation of earthquakes and the city is strong. A trembler is enough to scare some sense into anyone and San Francisco is very well-known for them. How tough are you to stay in the city?
2. We manage in a crime-ridden city.
With a crime rate of 70 per one thousand residents, San Francisco has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes. So, surviving and not being affected by crime is a feat of toughness and street smarts.
3. We have to avoid dog poo—everywhere
According to the Census and Animal Care and Control Department data, San Francisco has around 10,000 more dogs than children. And not all of those dogs have responsible owners. All we'll say is watch where you're walking at all times! The risk of being here can be cruel and funny. How tough are you?
4. We are constantly having to get arond parades, protests, and chaotic street activity.
When you're in the city and want to get from point A to Point B, the likelihood of a street parade or even protest delaying you is very possible. We love the celebrations here in the city, but make sure they don't mess up your plans. This can be tough for a newcomer, but easier for a native.
5. We survive hot days without air conditioning.
This is a jokey reason, but Americans love air conditioning. In a city of relatively cool temperatures, Air conditioning is not common. Heat waves are all the more extreme because no one has air conditioning. This is a difficult thing to learn and adapt to for newcomers, but for tough San Franciscans this is no problem.
6. We cope with very small spaces.
When you live in the city you can deal with smaller places where as many can't cope or adapt. The struggle of doing a lot with a little is reality here. With average rents surpassing those in New York, the high cost and low availability of apartments in San Francisco is driving locals to live small.
7. We don't get too attached to neighborhood haunts.
The fast and changing landscape of San Francisco is dizzying. San Franciscans have to deal with a constantly changing cast of stores and places.
8. We are very competitive when it comes to making money.
If you're not willing to work and play the game then you'll be left out in the cold. San Franciscans are tough cookies. The competition for a job in tech or the pressure of funding a start-up will make anyone feel stressed. If you wanted a more relaxing job then move or work elsewhere.
9. We walk up steep hills with glee.
They may be beautiful, but walking two blocks on a steep uphill street can be a real struggle. If your navigation says it's only a few blocks away, you might end up walking up a mountain face to get there. No pain, no gain!
10. We are constantly dealing with high costs and high rents.
A study released by Nested found that San Francisco residents pay the highest rent in the world. If you live in San Francisco, the rents can be absolutely soul-crushing and budget-breaking. Everything in this pricey town can be linked back to the absurd rent prices, so you need to be tough to survive and hack it.
