San Francisco is full of countless things to do, so taking a road trip to nowhere is a great way to get away from it all. And all you have to do is hop on the 101 and drive north. After crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, the surrounding areas only get sparser and sparser. Keep driving on this scenic road and you’ll soon see the true California wild and perhaps one of the few places on Earth that could survive a nuclear holocaust… Let’s begin the journey!
Start your journey by crossing the iconic Golden Gate Bridge.
Keep driving through Marin County, which is full of great natural attractions, but it's not quite remote enough here. Keep heading north, past Santa Rosa.
Once you're in Healdsburg, the scenery is more gentle and pastoral. Take time to explore the parks or just admire the beginning of what feels like the true California wild.
Healdsburg is also a good place to grab something to eat. This small wine town has a population of just over 11,000, but it boasts world-class food and wine.
Keep going north toward Ukiah and enjoy the trees and nature. A hammock would be an even better find for serene relaxation.
If you're lucky you may even start to see some real fall colors in Ukiah!
If you keep going north, you'll eventually reach the rural and remote area of Redwood Valley, where you'll definitely feel far away from the California you know in San Francisco.
Fun fact: Jim Jones' Peoples Temple cult once resided in Redwood Valley because Jones believed that it was one of the few places in the world likely to survive a nuclear holocaust. Yep, you'll be that far away from it all.
