The History Behind This Remote Hotel In Northern California Is Both Eerie And Fascinating
Placerville is a historic gem of a town located in El Dorado County. Noted for its many historic buildings and prominent role in the mining industry, the town is a fascinating look at California’s past. One of the town’s most well-known buildings is The Cary House Hotel. Often referred to as “The Jewel of Placerville”, this historic hotel offers guests an authentic experience of what it’s like to sleep in a 19th century building. The hotel’s history is utterly fascinating, but also contains some seriously creepy elements.
The Cary House Hotel was originally built in 1857. It remains a prominent and handsome building stretching along the side of Placerville's Main Street.
Walking into the lobby, it appears that much of the hotel looks exactly as it did over a century ago. Incredible woodwork covers the walls and every room is decorated with 19th century furniture and decor.
The Cary Hotel was constructed to be a grandiose place for prosperous travelers to stay when they passed through town. Visiting the hotel today, you can imagine how grand this place must have been so long ago.
The hotel hosted many famous figures during its heyday including Mark Twain, Levi Strauss, and Ulysses S. Grant. In more "recent" decades celebrities like Bette Davis and Elvis Presley have also stayed at the hotel.
Placerville was a quintessential Wild West town. It earned the nickname of "Hangtown" for the famous Hanging Tree which resides right across from the hotel. In fact, hotel guests would often use the second floor balcony to watch the town hangings from.
Of course there are rumors that the hotel is haunted. With such a long history involving the rough and tumble characters of this western town, how could it not be haunted? In fact, a few murders were known to have occurred in the hotel.
It's believed that spirits of hotel guests, employees, "ladies of the night", and more linger in the hotel. Even the current staff acknowledge that the hotel is indeed home to some paranormal activity.
Whether you're a history buff or a paranormal enthusiast, The Cary House Hotel is a fascinating place to visit and spend the night. It's not often you come across such history-rich hotels like this one nowadays. This place is a treasure that should be appreciated for its unique insight into California's past.
