The West Side Trail is one of Tuolumne's best-kept secrets. The trail follows a former railroad that used to belong to the West Side Lumber Company. The deterioriating railroad tracks haven't carried a train in some time, but it certainly makes for a picturesque hiking destination.
The trail couldn't be any more scenic. It winds its way along the ridge that hovers above the North Fork of the Tuolumne River. Along the way, you'll encounter a myriad of signs explaining the rich history behind the railroad tracks.
It turns out this narrow-gauge railroad was built well over a century ago, back in 1898. Its job was to bring lumber from the mountains into downtown Tuolumne City where the West Side Lumber Co. was located.
