When you need to escape it all, these seven Northern California locations feel off-the-grid and far away. Northern California is filled with remote, hidden locations– from small towns and even small “census-designated areas” to lakes and rivers that are known to few people. These places are off the main roads, away from highways, and provide a glimpse of unspoiled California.
This town in Lassen County has plenty to do and see. With a population of more than 16,000, it’s not off-the-grid but it is far away from the large Northern California cities.

Susanville has a small town feel with old buildings and signs that have a 1960s-70s vibe. Walk around downtown and visit some of the restaurants, bars, and shops you’ll only find in Susanville.

Cedarville feels forgotten in time. Like the set of an Old West movie, this town feels peaceful and quiet– because it is. The people of Cedarville are very welcoming to tourists and anyone passing through.

This river access point is a great place to spend a day on the shores of the Salmon River. There are two picnic tables in this “light use” area. Day use is free here and reservations are not required. The Salmon River in Siskiyou county is an off-the-grid spot to spend a day by the water.

This reservoir in Alpine County is located north of the Lake Tahoe area. At around 7,303 feet, Lake Alpine is a quiet mountain lake perfect for off-the-grid picnicking and camping. Visitors can enjoy swimming, boating, hiking, fishing, and biking. This remote lake is located off State Route 4.
Point Arena-Stornetta Public Lands, Point Arena, CA 95468, USA
Want some California coastline to yourself? This scenic area is near Flumeville. Haven’t heard of it? Yep, this place is that remote. It’s on the Mendocino coast, somewhere between Elk and Gualala. There is a lighthouse to explore and plenty of VRBOs not too far away if you want to stay the night.

This beautiful hot spring is a nice place to relax. Sit in a hot tub in front of the Feather River and surrounded by forested hills. Try a cold and hot dip by jumping in the river and into the tubs. A 24-hour reservation is required to access these springs on weekdays, and 48 hours on weekends. Call or text 925-783-2913.
Venture to the northernmost part of the state to explore the many beautiful forests, lakes, rivers, and beaches. Some of these areas almost feel untouched by people.
