The Northern California Observatory Is On Top Of A Mountain And You Need To Visit

Nestled in Fremont Peak State Park, you’ll find an astronomical observatory that sits 2,749 feet above sea level. The unique destination allows amateur astronomers to see high above the clouds, while blocking out much of the light pollution that Monterey County. The Fremont Peak Observatory is named after the mountain where it lives.

Fremont Peak itself was named after the American explorer and U.S. Army Captain John C. Fremont.
The first group to use Fremont Peak as an observatory was the San Mateo Astronomical Society in the 1960s.

The height of the peak allowed astronomers to see high above the fog line, blocking out much of the Monterey County light pollution.
The facility also houses the Challenger telescope.

The 30-inch diameter telescope is one of the largest in the world that is available for public use.
