It’s so hard to pick the most beautiful place in Northern California where you can sleep outside overnight because there are so many outstanding contenders. We think the Mattole Campground in the Kings Range National Conservation Area hit’s the nail on the head, however. Misty redwood forests, the sound of waves crashing, and 360 degree views all make this a pretty stellar camping area.
The Mattole Campground is located near Petrolia in the Kings Range National Conservation Area.
It features 14 tent/trailer campsites with picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, but no hookups. There is potable water here until the end of October each year. It is wheelchair accessible and there's no OHV access. It's $8 to camp here.
You'll quickly fall in love with this part of Northern California. The King Range National Conservation Area is one of the most remote stretches of coastline in the continental U.S... and it's also one of the most beautiful!
Remember to practice Leave No Trace principles while you are visiting. This means that all trash and evidence of human activity should leave with you when you go. It's a beautiful piece of land that should be treasured and protected.
To find the Mattole Campground at the north end of King Range at the beach, take U.S. 101 and the Garberville, South Fork/Honeydew, or Ferndale exits. Follow signs toward Petrolia, turn on Lighthouse Road toward ocean.
