Stretching across the Albion River in Mendocino County is the only remaining wooden bridge on California State Route 1. The Albion River Bridge is an absolute stunner and it's definitely worth seeing for yourself.
The bridge that you see crossing the Albion River today was constructed in 1944, but the river has actually had a bridge crossing as far back as 1861. However, the present bridge's predecessor was low and required a dangerous climb up and down the bluffs on each side of the river.
As a result, a much taller bridge was necessary for crossing the river. As it was constructed during World War II, both concrete and steel were in a shortage. Instead, salvaged wood was chosen for the bridge's material.
At almost 1,000-feet long, the wooden bridge makes for quite the sight. It might even be the longest timber trestle highway bridge in the country that's still in use to this day.
Plans were made to replace the bridge by 2021 but Albion residents have made it clear that they oppose the plan. A group called the Albion Bridge Stewards has done a lot to keep the bridge in safe operating order. The iconic bridge is listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the California Register of Historical Resources.
Located right at the point where the Albion River empties into the Pacific Ocean, the scene of this historic bridge couldn't be more picturesque. Seeing the ocean peeking through the bridge's towering supports is simply a sight you can't ever forget.
