There’s A Hiking Trail In Northern California That Pays Tribute To Johnny Cash And It’s So Rock N’ Roll
If you’re a fan of Johnny Cash, then chances are you know all about his influence on Northern California. After all, he recorded one of his most iconic albums, “At Folsom Prison”, right here in our region of the state. It turns out that there is now a trail that is dedicated to paying tribute to the musician, and it’s a must for any rock n’ roll lover. The Johnny Cash Trail was officially completed in 2017 and it’s both a wonderful outdoor experience and a unique art installation. Folsom is forever grateful for the musical legend Johnny Cash. Cash is credited for thrusting Folsom into the spotlight with his famous song "Folsom Prison Blues", and the city has paid a special tribute to him with the Johnny Cash Trail.
Spanning 2.5 miles, the trail was unveiled in October 2017. Not only does the trail act as a means of transportation and recreation, but it's also a delightful celebration of one of the most famous rock n' roll legends.
The first portion of the trail crosses the Johnny Cash Bridge which was constructed in 2014 and was specifically designed to reflect the East Gate Guard Tower in Folsom Prison.
There's no doubt that this trail has a connection to Johnny Cash. Most of the trail wanders through property owned by Folsom Prison, the site where Cash recorded his famous album "At Folsom Prison" in 1968.
To top it all off, the trail is complete with several larger-than-life art pieces. A 40-foot steel sculpture of Cash towers over trail walkers and a 15-foot silhouette of Cash playing his guitar pays the perfect tribute to the musician.
Hikers and cyclists can even use a smart phone app which incorporates audio to bring the art installations to life. The app provides historical context behind each piece and makes this an experience to remember.
