A Gaping Hole Is Draining This Northern California Lake And It's Mesmerizing
Record-breaking rainfall in California has reawakened one of the state’s most bizarre sights. Water is being pulled out of Lake Berryessa through a massive hole, and it looks absolutely insane.
Though it may look like a portal to another dimension has opened up 70 miles from Sacramento, this strange phenomenon is actually man-made. The Monticello Dam Morning Glory Spillway was created to ensure the dam doesn’t overflow. When the water level gets high enough, it spills over the edge of this massive pipe and flows down over 275 feet into a river below.
This is the first time the spillway has been activated in over a decade.
If you’re headed town to the lake to check this crazy spectacle out in person, the California Bureau of Reclamation says to keep an eye out for possible mudslides and debris caused by the heavy rains.
Check out the drone video below for an astonishing bird’s-eye view of the spillway.
