Like most history museums, the Del Norte County Historical Society Museum, built in 1926, serves as a repository of artifacts, photographs, and other memorabilia. But here, the building once served as the Hall of Records, County Jail, and Sheriff’s Office. This makes the exhibit spaces their own special attraction, including the cells on the second floor which once held the female inmates.

At first glance, it may seem like the Battery Point Lighthouse is inaccessible, resting on a strip of land surrounded by water. But it is at low tide when the magic happens! When the ocean water recedes, it reveals a two-hundred-foot-long road to this historic structure first put into service in 1856.

Formally established in 1968, Redwood National Park is truly one of California’s most significant wonders. Designated a UNESCO world heritage site, it is here that visitors flock from all over the world to experience the tallest trees on Earth. But the park offers a great deal more, including rich Native American history, dozens of miles of rugged coastline, and a wealth of flora and fauna.

Although not a one-off historic site, visitors may also enjoy embarking upon the Tsunami Self-Guided Walking Tour. The tour highlights the numerous Crescent City locations affected by two tsunamis that wreaked havoc here in 1964 (recorded as the worst tsunami disaster in the U.S.) and again in 2011. While both tsunamis were devastating, the remnants are still an important part of the town’s history.
