The Hammond Trail is a multi-use trail that's open for hiking, biking, and equestrian use. It stretches north from the Arcata Bottoms up to Clam Beach County Park in McKinleyville. Providing scenic beauty every step of the way, it's no wonder the trail is so popular among residents.
You'll start the trail at the Mad River pedestrian bridge, which represents a unique bit of local history. Originally, this site was home to a wooden covered bridge that was built in 1905 and was part of the Humboldt Northern Railway. The covered bridge remained in use until 1942 and the bridge continued to be used as a railroad bridge up until 1961.
The southern stretch of the trail provides sweeping views of the ocean and Mad River. Keep an eye out for marine wildlife like seals, sea otters, and bird species like herons, ducks, cormorants, and Aleutian geese.
After reaching the small town of McKinleyville, the trail winds through residential neighborhoods and through Hiller Park. Beyond the park, the trail meanders through lush conifer forest and spectacular bluffs. There are a lot of picnic tables and benches situated along the path so you can stop and enjoy the view.
Continuing north, you'll enjoy more lovely views from the bluff before descending onto a short, paved section that crosses Strawberry Creek. The trail terminates at Clam Beach County Park, where you enjoy a walk along the beach before heading back!
