Located right along the coast on native Kashia Pomo territory, Fort Ross State Historic Park has a very intense appearance in contrast to its beautiful destination. It consists of both restored and reconstructed wooden structures that resemble the fort's original appearance from the early 1800s.
The park was established as a California State Park in 1909 and, in fact, was one of the very first state parks. As the southernmost outpost for the Russian Empire in colonial America, there's definitely a lot of history being preserved here!
The fort was established in 1812 by a group of Russian and native Alaskan Aleuts who had sailed south. Built from redwood, the outpost acted as a place to hunt, trade, and plant crops. It was also where a total of four Russian ships were built: The Rumiantsev, Buldakov, Volga, and Kiakhta.
Ultimately, the location proved to be less than ideal for trading and maintenance. On top of conflicts with the Mexican government and American settlers, the Russians closed up shop and ended up selling the land to John Sutter.
These days, the park serves as a fascinating reminder of a little-known piece of California history. It has cultural and historic significance for a variety of groups - not just Russians - including the first people Kashia and Alaska natives.
