It’s no secret that California is especially susceptible to earthquakes. Our state experiences at least a few notable earthquakes every year, and several more that go unnoticed. It’s simply the nature of our state! However, there’s something incredibly humbling about visiting the famous earthquake fault in Mammoth Lakes. It’s here that you can see a landscape that looks straight out of a disaster movie. The Earthquake Fault can be found within the dense foothills of the Inyo National Forest. Located on public lands, the area is comprised of a parking area, restrooms, picnic area, and a self-guided interpretive trail.
The trail is well-maintained and easy to navigate, making it perfect for a family outing. The trail will descend deep into the forest, leading you straight to what looks to be a giant fissure in the ground.
Additionally, the fault couldn't be located in a more magical setting. The trail meanders through stunning groves of old-growth red fir, Jeffrey pine, and lodgepole pines. You'll find several interpretive signs dotted along the trail which provide information about the region's rich history and ecology.
Although referred to as the Earthquake Fault, the fissure likely wasn't the result of a single earthquake event. Instead, it's believed that the fracture occurred around 600 years ago during one of the Inyo/Mono Craters eruptions.
This region of Northern California is a hot spot of geologic activity, from bubbling geothermal hot springs to the occasional earthquake, so it's no wonder it's home to a mesmerizing natural phenomenon such as the Earthquake Fault.
