There is certainly no shortage of charming coastal towns in Northern California. Our region is full of sleepy beach towns where it seems that time stands still and the living is always easy. However, if we had to pick…we would choose the town featured here as the most charming of them all. This awesome coastal town boasts the immense amount of natural beauty that all of our towns do, but it is also one of the most remote getaway destinations you’ll come across. This place combines the best of both worlds, and you might find yourself booking a vacation here before you know it.
The small community of Albion, California is home to just 169 people. This quaint town often gets overlooked for the more recognized town of Mendocino which is just a short ten-minute drive away.
The town is definitely a quiet one. Not a lot goes on here, but that's just how the locals like it. There are a few bed and breakfasts scattered around town, but people who visit here are mainly looking for sweet solitude in one of the most beautiful regions of California.
By far Albion's most recognized attraction is the beautiful Albion River Bridge. Recognized for its towering wooden trestles and built in 1944, this bridge is actually considered to be one of the last remaining wooden bridges on California Highway 1.
The bridge crosses over the peaceful Albion River. The river contains a long and beautiful stretch of water that is perfect for kayaking, canoeing, or paddleboarding through the area. There is also a great little campground that resides next to the river.
As with many of California's coastal towns, greenery is abundant in Albion. It kind of resembles a scene out of Jurassic Park when the area becomes shrouded in dense fog (in a good way, of course).
Albion is home to a few beaches that are great for exploring the coast. Navarro Beach has a unique history since it was once the site of a small lumber town called Navarro before a fire destroyed much of the town in 1906. Today, the driftwood-covered beach makes for a lovely place to walk around.
Navarro Point Preserve resides just north of the beach and contains a pretty great 1.5-mile loop hiking trail that makes it easy to traverse the rocky bluffs of the coast.
If you're looking for a quiet place to explore the Mendocino Coast, Albion is going to be it. It's the perfect location to decompress from life and immerse yourself in the vast beauty of our state.
