This area is a fantastic place to see no matter what time of year it is, but it’s become especially notable for boasting the best fall foliage in Northern California. Located roughly 20 minutes south of South Lake Tahoe, Hope Valley is a gorgeous oasis of fall color during this time of year. The leaves start to change around mid-September and last well into October. The addition of the Sierra Mountains and the bright blue skies are just the cherry on top!
Sitting at 7,000-feet above sea level on the eastern side of Carson Pass, Hope Valley is a longtime favorite among photographers, hikers, fishermen, and other outdoor recreationists—and it's easy to see why! The valley's pristine, unspoiled beauty is easy to fall in love with.
Whether you're looking for the perfect spot to take a colorful hike, spend the night in a beautiful campground, or simply go for a relaxing Sunday drive, Hope Valley is just the place. The beautiful aspen trees boast vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red, and it's a pure delight to see.
If driving is your go-to method of exploring fall scenery, simply hop on Highway 89 heading south through Meyers. You'll eventually reach the junction with Highway 88 where you can go either east or west and be completely immersed in fall foliage the entire way.
Additionally, you'll find plenty of resorts and destinations where you can spend the day or treat yourself to an overnight adventure. Sorensen's Resort is a popular home base for recreation, along with Grover Hot Springs State Park and the Hope Valley Resort.
