Northern California is no stranger when it comes to ancient groves of beautiful forests. In fact, our state is home to some of the oldest growths of coastal redwoods in the entire world. We’re pretty lucky to live in such close vicinity to some of the most spectacular forest scenes imaginable. The forest featured here is considered to be one of the largest remaining contiguous old-growth forests on earth. Our redwoods never disappoint, but this particular ancient forest really does look like it could’ve been plucked straight from the pages of a storybook!
Located within Humboldt Redwoods State Park is the utterly beautiful Rockefeller Forest. Here you'll find not only some of the tallest trees in the world but the oldest, as well.
The Rockefeller Loop Trail is approximately a half mile long and is the perfect way to take in the forest's stunning scenery. The ADA accessible trail takes you straight through the heart of this breathtaking ancient forest.
Some of the trees in this 10,000-acre grove are believed to be thousands of years old. Visiting any redwood forest is always a mesmerizing experience, but the trees in Rockefeller forest are some of the tallest you've ever seen. Here you'll find the 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th tallest trees in the world!
Flat Iron Tree is one of the first things you'll come across upon the trail. Here you can gawk at the massive fallen redwood that boasts a cross section that's 17.5 feet wide.
Definitely make a stop at Giant Tree, which is listed as the "Champion Coast Redwood" at 370 feet tall and 53 feet in circumference. The feeling of standing right up against this mega beast of a tree is simply unexplainable.
You might just strain your neck trying to look up and see how tall these giants are. This is definitely one of the most impressive redwood forests you can visit.
Strolling through the forest, it really feels like you've been transported to a different time. It's crazy to think that many of these trees were here long before people even knew this region of the world existed.
If you've been thinking about visiting some of Northern California's redwoods, you'll definitely want to make a stop at one of the most ancient forests in existence. The Rockefeller Forest can be found off of Exit 663 on Highway 101. You'll follow Honeydew Road for about 1.5 miles before seeing the forest on your right.
