1. Icelandic State Park
Enjoy a day on the shores of Lake Renwick in the 912 acres of the Icelandic State Park. You can stroll along the shore, stop for a picnic under some of the old oak trees, or enjoy splashing around at the swimming beach. Lake Renwick is perfect for boating and fishing and the views are lovely from dawn until dusk.

2. Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge
Located around Kenmare, North Dakota, Des Lacs NWR is an amazing destination for a sunny day. See the rolling hills around the long lakes, take a hiking trail in the refuge, and see the thousands of birds and animals that call this place home.

3. Beaver Lake State Park
Not far from Wishek, North Dakota is the lovely Beaver Lake State Park. The park has everything you need for a great summer outing: picnic shelters, a swimming beach, hiking trails, and even cabins and campgrounds if you want to extend your stay.

4. Grahams Island State Park
Experience Devils Lake from within it on Grahams Island. The state park that encompasses part of the island has made it a fantastic outdoor recreation destination. There are plenty of docks to sail off of or fish from, trails, campgrounds, and a swim beach. Devils Lake is known for its legendary fishing and this park is a great place to take advantage of it on a nice summer day.

5. Sullys Hill National Game Preserve
Looking for a different way to enjoy Devils Lake? Why not head to its southern shores and see it from the top of Sullys Hill. This game preserve has not only many fascinating animals to see - from bison to foxes and everything in between - but also a trail to the top of the hill that has the most spectacular views from the top. Other trails exist within the park and it is great for the whole family.

6. Lake Metigoshe State Park
Head up way north near the Canadian border to Lake Metigoshe State Park. This is one of the most popular lake destinations in the state, and there's a good reason for that. The area breathtaking with its scenery, and the lake is just perfect for all sorts of summer day activities. Canoeing or kayaking, fishing, swimming, or just having a picnic on the shore - all of these opportunities and more are waiting for you here.

7. Lake Hoskins Park
This quaint little park on a lake near Ashley, North Dakota has a unique feature. Other than being a prime spot for camping, picnics, fishing, and other general lakeside fun, Lake Hoskins has history. The stone monument you see in the photo above was built and placed by the original settlers of the area. The residents at the time carved their names into the rocks, and it has been there for over 100 years.

8. Lake Sakakawea State Park
What better place to spend a day at the lake than the biggest lake in North Dakota? Lake Sakakawea is massive and has multiple parks along its shores, one of which being none other than Lake Sakakawea State Park. The park checks off all the amenities you'd need for the ultimate summer day outing.

9. McDowell Dam Recreation Area

10. Harmon Lake Recreation Area
Another great Bismarck-Mandan area lake is Harmon Lake. Enjoy the views of the deep blue water on the rolling prairie hills around the lake. The recreation area has tons of campsites, boat ramps, kayak docks, playgrounds, and 13 miles of trails.

11. Lewis and Clark State Park
