If you’re not quite feeling up to hiking North Dakota’s 96 mile Maah Daah Hey trail, there are plenty of other hikes you can take. On the opposite end of the spectrum, you can take a short and sweet 1/4 mile hike up to one of the most grand and stunning views in the state. Where is this trail? These bison roam free in Sullys Hill National Game Preserve near Saint Michael, North Dakota, along the shores of Devils Lake.

Many other animals call this game preserve home. Elk, deer, and thousands of wetlands and prairie birds. You can even see prairie dog towns at Sullys Hill.
The park has a variety of landscapes and a few miles of nature trails that will take you along the beach, across the prairie hills, and into the forest of trees surrounding the lake.

There are over 1,600 acres of this natural landscape in the park. Did you know that it used to be a national park right alongside the Theodore Roosevelt National Park? It was even established by President Theodore Roosevelt himself. The park was disbanded but still exists as a game preserve.
It also has one of North Dakota's shortest and sweetest hikes, just a 1/4 mile trail up this hill.

This stunning view is only seen from the observation deck at the top of the trail. It showcases the huge, expansive beauty of North Dakota's largest natural lake, Devils Lake.
The view from every direction is gorgeous from this overlook, and it's only a short 1/4 miles back down the trail for a 1/2 mile round trip.
