Leah moved to North Dakota when she was 12 years old and has traveled from the Red River Valley to the badlands and many places in between. She loves small-town life and currently enjoys living on a small farm in the ND prairie. She's always had a passion for writing and has participated in novel writing challenges such as NaNoWriMo multiple times. Her favorite part about this job is recognizing small businesses that deserve a boost and seeing the positive affect her articles can have on their traffic, especially in rural areas that might have otherwise gone overlooked.
One of the most scenic, lovely small towns in North Dakota is also one that has tons of birds. It’s gorgeous to visit year round for the different birds that migrate through the area. Not only that, but it has plenty of charming attractions of its own to visit. Take a look at it for yourself to see just how special it is:
Kenmare is one of the best small towns in North Dakota. The population is 1,096 residents and it remains a quaint, quiet place that people love.
As for attractions, it has a historic Pioneer Village with old buildings that represent an early pioneer town in North Dakota. It also has an awesome, real Danish Mill built over a hundred years ago.
Kenmare is also known for being right among one of North Dakota's most gorgeous and biggest national wildlife refuges, the Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge.
Geese, ducks, pelicans, and partridges are just a few of the many types of birds that live and thrive here. Some only come for certain times of the year, sometimes by the thousands, and others stick around all seasons.
Along with birds, the refuge is home to animals like beavers, porcupines, and deer, just to name a few. You can see all these by visiting the refuge and taking the trails or auto route.
Kenmare is located right in the middle of all this and remains one of North Dakota's most scenic, quiet, and lovely towns, even if there are way more birds than people.
Have you ever visited Kenmare or the Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge? You definitely should if you haven’t already! It is especially gorgeous in the spring when the wildflowers come in. Here are some more great, scenic small towns located in patches of North Dakota nature.
