Passing by this unusual hotel will certainly make you do a double take, but you’d have to be pretty far out of the way to even find it. Located out in a tiny town with a population of only 53 people, this historic spot is one of North Dakota’s oldest hotels and certainly one of its most unique.
Out in the teeny town of Fullerton, North Dakota, is one of the Peace Garden State's most unusual yet beautiful hotels.
The town is truly out in the middle of nowhere and doesn't have so much as a paved street, yet it still holds that classic ND small town charm. One of its main draws is right among the grain bins and elevators. Can you spot it?
That house to the right in the photo above is the Carroll House, a historic place built over a century ago. What makes it unique is its unusual architecture and the fact that the entire thing is covered in shingles from top to bottom.
The Carroll House was built in 1889 - the same year North Dakota became a state and only a year after Fullerton was founded - and was named after a son of its builder. It has barely changed in appearance since it was constructed and is one of the best preserved historic buildings in North Dakota.
Now on the National Register of Historic Places, you can stay there for yourself as it serves as the town's one and only hotel. It is truly a one-of-a-kind spot that you couldn't say you stayed at anywhere else.
