7 Places In North Dakota That Are Off The Beaten Path But Worth The Trip
If you’ve seen all of the big attractions in North Dakota and are looking for something more, there are plenty of lesser-known places that are just as interesting. They may be a little bit off the beaten path, but they are definitely worth the time to see them.
A little ways off of ND-13 near Linton is this little locally-made grotto with a bell tower. You can ring the bells to hear them echo across the prairie, and it is also said they bring good luck.
This historical site has a little bit of everything and deserves a lot more attention. Other than being a huge, beautifully preserved fort that has quite a history, there is also theater performances and even a bed and breakfast - The Totten Inn, shown above. You can make a weekend out of a trip here or spend the afternoon. Either way, you'll have learned a lot by the end of your visit!
This unique monument is a testament to North Dakota's rich agricultural history. These threshing machines of a time since mostly passed wind up a hill that you can climb up and explore as close as you'd like. It is located just outside of Napoleon off of ND-34.
Other than the very well-known overlooks and parts of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, there are some hidden gems among it that are amazing even on their own. One of the largest and last remaining petrified forests is located here, and there is a loop trail that goes through it. These prehistoric tree stumps have been mineralized into fossils that have stood the test of time, and are right on the surface for you to see up close and personal. This is located in the South Unit of the park.
Jamestowns' Frontier Town is a fairly popular way to experience what life used to be like on the prairie, but did you know Rugby also has its own village? These buildings have been preserved and moved to this spot to create a little town. Each is full of artifacts of the era and create the perfect way to experience that time.
The highest point in North Dakota is hiding out in the middle of nowhere near Amidon. Seemingly jutting up out of no where among the western hills, this butte is completely unique. The views are very impressive once you get to the top.
This historic fort will take you right back to the 1800s. It's a great place to learn about the rich history of the state, and there is plenty to see there.
