8 Things No Self-Respecting North Dakotan Would Ever Do
North Dakotans aren’t super serious or judgmental people, but there are a few things that just won’t fly here. If you do these, you might get some funny looks from people who live here. These are kind of like rules to live by that just come from habits we get living here, and you’d best know them!
1. Call what is obviously pop anything else.
It isn't soda - that is for baking. It is pop and anyone who says differently is just plain wrong. North Dakotans know this!
2. Be unprepared for the weather.
If it's going to be cold, we'll be prepared. We don't mess around and run outside in shorts and a light jacket when there are windchill warnings and the temperature is well below zero.
3. Turn down a fishing trip.
North Dakota has quite a few beautiful lakes and rivers with great fishing, and we love it. There's no way you'd catch someone turning down a nice fishing trip for something else.
4. Not comment on the weather in casual conversation.
If the topic of weather doesn't come up in a casual conversation you're having at least once, are you really even having a conversation? It's just a requirement.
5. Talk with accents like in
That movie is completely inaccurate when it comes to accents. There is no way anyone has one that strong, and if they did, they'd be from Minnesota and not North Dakota like most people would seem to believe.
6. Think we are inferior to the other Dakota.
North Dakota is better than South Dakota and we would never say otherwise.
7. Miss the local county fair.
From the smallest counties to the biggest, you don't miss your local county fair. It's just a part of living out on the prairie.
8. Not stand outside and watch an approaching storm, or even pull out a lawn chair and enjoy the show.
We love watching distant storms roll across the prairie and figuring out where they are headed and how bad they might be. We aren't stupid, though. If it starts rolling towards us then we'll head inside!
What other things would you never do as a North Dakotan? We certainly have some
interesting, undying habits!
