In the tiny town of McLeod, with a population of only 27 as of the last census, is a place that attracts hundreds: a unique restaurant in North Dakota called the Silver Prairie Saloon.
It's a small town and a small place, but it is not to be underestimated. On the town's Main Avenue, you'll find the restaurant. From the outside, it looks like a nice themed bar and grill type joint, sporting some hitching posts for effect...
I took a small personal tour of the place before hours and I was in awe. Everything from the bar to the tables, the wall decor, even the bathrooms - it feels like a modern day western saloon with a fun, awesome atmosphere. It'll make you feel like a real cowboy or cowgirl just off the range.
You can even take a ride on some saddles instead of stools up at the bar.
Grassland ribeye, shrimp, walleye, steak; it's a carnivore's dream! But the menu doesn't stop there - pretty much anyone could find something they'd love, and the food is nothing short of top quality. These perfectly crafted meals far surpass your average small town bar and grill.
Throughout every week, there are specials serving up fun and different dishes that range from ethnic cuisine to North Dakota favorites. Every day, something delicious is being made.
Whether you get one of the classics off their menu or some truly scrumptious daily special, you'll be more than satisfied. And don't forget about dessert - they have homemade pies, ice cream, and more.
The Silver Prairie Saloon is open every day but Sundays, snow or shine, when you can gather around the fire pit out front to share some great times with friends and family.
Silver Prairie Saloon is a hidden gem that everyone should have on their North Dakota restaurant bucket lists.
If you’d like to visit there – and you definitely should – you can find it about an hour southwest of Fargo. You can’t miss it if you’re in town. Visit their Facebook page to see what they’re up to and find more information. A word of warning – this place does get very busy on the weekends, so plan accordingly or call ahead.

What country restaurants in North Dakota are worth the drive?
McLeod isn’t the only wild west town in North Dakota worth the extra miles for its great eats. You’ll find worthwhile restaurants hidden all over the prairie. The Pastime Club & Steakhouse in Marmarth, ND is one of the most remote restaurants in the state, and yet they serve some of the best food you’ll ever try. Towns like Fort Ransom may seem out of the way to visit but it’s worth it when you discover the Lunchbox Eatery’s fantastic meals.
What are the most unique restaurants in North Dakota?
There are quite a few unusual yet totally awesome unique restaurants in the state. Along with wild west places, there are other themed restaurants in North Dakota including a medieval castle restaurant called the Excalibur Steakhouse in Regent. Looking for something more out-of-this-world? Space Aliens is a Bismarck-based restaurant and entertainment center that has incredible BBQ, delicious Outer Space Fries, and even a second location in Fargo.
What are the best hidden gem restaurants in North Dakota?
Sometimes you’ve got to be in the know to find the best of the best. Great hidden gem restaurants in the Peace Garden State include spots like the Red Pepper in Grand Forks, an otherwise nondescript building that has a great local reputation for their tasty grinders. Wahpeton has a deli hidden inside of an old video store called the Wahpeton Deli & Eatery that serves up drool-worthy meals right next to the racks of DVDs. You never know what special spots you might be just passing by.
