There are many popular parks throughout North Dakota. Theodore Roosevelt National Park, anything around Lake Sakakawea, Lake Metigoshe State Park… the list goes on. They’re all well-loved and for good reason, but they aren’t the only recreation areas in the state. An often overlooked park is located in Barnes County, not far from the town of Kathryn. This lesser-known park in North Dakota is the definition of a hidden gem, and it’s just waiting for you to discover it.
Clausen Springs Recreation Area is a treasure on the prairie that not enough people know about. Visit it for yourself to discover what makes it an outdoor paradise.
The North Country National Scenic Trail, a trail that spans from New York to North Dakota, goes through this park. There is also a scenic loop trail that's only two miles long, offering great hiking.
The centerpiece is the Clausen Spring Lake, offering fishing and boating opportunities. The recreation area provides a fishing dock, boat ramp, and swimming area.
If you want a night out under the stars in the peace and quiet of nature, I highly recommend camping here overnight. They have both modern and primitive campsites that start at just $15 a night.
