If there’s anything I love about North Dakota (haha, okay – spoiler: all of it), it’s that you’ll never encounter enormous crowds out here. Somehow, and by some tremendous injustice within the universe, the beautiful little state is one of the least-visited in the entire nation – what’s up with that? It’s definitely not for any lack of things to do, things to see, or places to fall in love with. There are countless jaw-dropping natural wonders in North Dakota, and today, I’d like to take a moment to appreciate one of our best. Check out the awe-inspiring wonder that is the Sheyenne National Grasslands. I know it doesn’t sound like much, but that’s where you’re wrong, buckaroo. Check it out:

Sure, the word "grasslands" implies that it's flat, boring, and featureless, but I promise you: It's not. Far from it.
This is the one and only grassland in the tallgrass prairie region of the United States.

Its stunning, wide-open vastness is primed for all sorts of fun stuff; once you get out here, you'll find there's no shortage of stuff to get into.
Sure, it's sprawling - it consists of 70,180 acres of public land, plus another 64,769 acres of privately-owned land.

I personally can't get enough of the Hankinson Hills area and its trail, but there are others as well, like the North Country National Scenic Trail and Oak Leaf Trail. Do one, or do them all - you can't go wrong.
Other popular (if you could call them that) activities at Sheyenne Grasslands include backpacking, biking, camping and/or cabin rentals, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, and so much more.

Plus, considering North Dakota is literally one of the least-visited states (we see about 20-21 million people per year while California expects to see 279.1 million in 2023 alone), it'll be nice and quiet. Tranquil, even. You might not even run into one person out here, depending on when you show up.
Personally, I'm a fan of peace and quiet out in the wilderness, so this is one of those "secret spots" I've got up my sleeve that I'm sure you'll love, too.
