Don’t let the summer season pass you by without making a trek to a town known as “The Gateway to the Smokies.” Waynesville, North Carolina is an ideal way to make your summer complete, with loads of things to do, places to see, shopping to be done, and restaurants to explore. And with historic B&Bs, Waynesville is a weekend getaway waiting to happen. Take a look:
The town of Waynesville is known as the Gateway to the Smokies. It was founded in 1810, and by 1880... had 225 residents. Today, it's the largest North Carolina town west of Asheville. The current population is right around 10,000 residents.
Over the years since this Great Smoky Mountain National Park banner was flying over downtown Waynesville, the historic area really hasn't changed much from how you see it here on this undated postcard (estimated to be from the 1930s-40s).
Locals and visitors still find the streets of the historic district lined with shops, restaurants, places to stay, bakeries and more.
A variety of shopping experiences makes this charming town appeal to just about everyone in the family. From general stores, bookstores, bakeries, a chocloate shop, restaurants and more, there really is something for everyone. The Olde Brick House, shown above and below, is a favorite among locals and visitors. You'll find a unique blend of Colonial and primitive furnishings and decor here.
But shopping isn't the only reasons to visit Waynesville. Sightseeing is also a must.
In recent decades, the historic district has seen a major revitalization, and the hard work shows in every delightful little detail you'll see as you stroll the streets.
Whatever you do, don't leave town without a stop at the Museum of North Carolina Handicrafts located within the historic Shelton House. The restored house is a testament to the early settlement days of Waynesville, and the arts and crafts found inside the museum are lovely.
Hungry? Of course, a town like Waynesville has some top-notch eateries! For the best BBQ around, head to Haywood Smoke House. Enjoy that unseasonably cool mountain air outside on the patio, or if it's too chilly, then sit inside.
For yet another meal to remember, you simply must head to The Sweet Onion.
Nestlled in the heart of beautiful Downtown Waynesville, this locally-owned eatery offers regional cuisine with traditional favorites like Southern fried chicken and fresh mountain trout.
For a summer getaway, you can't beat Waynesville, the Gateway to the Smokies! When was the last time you visited this North Carolina town? We'd love to know!
