You Can See For More Than A Mile At This North Carolina Rock That Rises To 150 Feet

The majestic unique natural wonder Raven Rock sits in Raven Rock State Park about 40 miles from Raleigh and nine miles west of Lillington. This massive crystalline structure rises up an impressive 150 feet giving breathtaking views of the water and wildlife below. While the pictures give an idea of what to expect, it is really something you must see in person to appreciate the perspective and worn-in details the years have left.

The title was originally Patterson's Rock named after a European settler whose canoe overturned nearby.

But even the desolateness of winter shows off its gorgeous bones.

The wooded trails leading to the rock are well-marked and full of wildlife.

For a better perspective, take a walk underneath.

Another reward at this park is the rock overlooks the Cape Fear River.

A fun bit of history showcases this sign going up in 1970 honoring the release of Slow Poke at his new home in Raven Rock State Park.

Make plans to visit this unique natural wonder and Raven Rock State Park’s newest campground, which includes a bathhouse, six cabins, nine RV sites, 15 tent sites, and is open year-round seven days a week. And afterward, take the approximately 20-mile drive to Sanford and order some of the best fried chicken at Ron’s Barn.
